Goodbye, Prof Lim: A Tribute to Professor Lim Chee Seng

my friend Iris, who was my M.A. coursemate, sent me a message via facebook that our dear professor had passed away. i was numb at first, then felt an ache, and finally i started crying.

it's strange that some people who are not related to us by blood can have such an overwhelming effect on us.

Prof Lim Chee Seng was the most celebrated Literature lecturer in UM  when i registered for the first year of M.A. at the Fac of Arts and Social Science in June 2001. because of his Beatle hairdo, i secretly called his hair "rambut topi jerman". that was also the time when i met my M.A. friends Elison, Jaya Sree and K.Zainon. Iris and Nash joined a semester later. Prof Lim taught us Rennaissance Literature, and out of all my lecturers, i think my classmates enjoyed his class the most, simply because he was like a father to us, and didn't mind a bit if we loosen up (unlike the other lecturers' classes, where we had to be the examplary serious literature scholars that we were supposed to be). i remember on the first day of our class he played Rennaissance music, but we were busily passing papers around to write down our emails and handphone numbers. he didn't mind at all. in all of his classes when we discussed Milton, Herbert, Donne and of course, Shakespeare, we would be fascinated with Prof Lim's extensive knowledge, and would be struck with awe when he started reciting lines from Shakespeare or Donne.

i owe a lot to him because he was willing to write a letter to the Ministry to back me up when i had some technical problem regarding the scholarship. imagine, he painstakingly wrote the letter himself, in Bahasa Melayu.a great man who didn't feel it was beneath him to type and print the letter himself when he could have asked one of the clerks in the Eng Dept office to do it.

in my second year, Prof Lim went to Jaidapur U to become Visiting Professor, but when he returned, there were new courses for the junior M.A. students and i really envied them because they got to learn from Prof Lim. and because of the reason that Prof Lim was away, too,i never got him as my dissertation supervisor. back then i decided on post-colonial literature as my area of specialisation.

when i received my graded dissertation, i was pleasantly surprised to find out that Prof Lim was my internal examiner and i remember his words "i recommend that the dissertation of this candidate be passed and be awarded M.A."

2 years ago before he left UM, i remember asking him if he'd become my PhD supervisor should i return to my alma mater.

so, imagine my shock last night when i found out that this gentle, courteous and very much civilised literature scholar had passed on. iris told me that his house was crowded with people. even his facebook page was filled with words of commiseration from his former students, myself included.

so goodbye, my dear professor. and thank you for your knowledge and kindness.

Hi,

Thanks for this. It's always a comfort to read such nice words being said in memory of the deceased, especially when I myself am still in shock over this devastating news...

I went to Prof Lim's wake service last night, and I was trying so hard to keep the tears in.

Prof Lim taught me all through my undergrad years, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who got to be in his presence quite often.

Everything everyone says about him- about his kindness, his genuine care for us, his knowledge wisdom and his 'coolness'(he was so cool!)- is true. I don't think anyone can ever find anything bad to say about him. And for all those qualities and more, Malaysia has truly lost a great soul.

When Prof Lim left UM for UPSI, I was so mad at UM for making that mistake, and I already felt we lost someone special there.

And now he's left us all for good. But he'll be in our hearts forever, and his name will always be remembered.

I really don't know how to express my feeling when heard that he passed away last month. A friend told me this sad and shocking news at noon today and still – that is 10 pm – I can't help weeping.
Yes, that's right: how someone from another nationality, another religion, another culture and another blood can have so deep effect on us?! He was 12 years older than me, and I loved him as an elder brother. I never forget the day I met him for the first time: 8th August 2005 at 11 a.m. in Eng. Dept.
I never forget his kindness in giving me a table lamp and a printer when he heard that two young Chinese boys had stolen 3000.00RM from me on my arrival to KL. In this way, he wanted to compensate the ill behavior of those two guys and tell me that not all Chinese are bad.
I remember once he asked me to have a brief speech on Iran – my country – as he believed Malaysian students are eager to know more about Iran, and that they may have questions to ask. I accepted willingly and he was pleased to see that the speech was welcomed and attended so warmly.
He once told me that like Moses who wandered for 40 years, he worked in UM for 40 years and never expected to be behaved so unkindly by his colleagues and UM authorities.
I even remember that once he attended university on Sunday just to complete my unfinished research project. Just imagine: he avoided his formal holiday (Sunday) just to finish my work as he knew my flight is on Monday, and that I don't have enough time to stay more in Malaysia.
He liked the method of my film shooting and photography. So, he invited me in different conferences and seminars to record that literary event for him and UM. Tonight, I watched the film I had shot myself of his speech on 12 April 2006 in a ceremony in which he had delivered a lecture to a get his full professorship. Who imagined that he wouldn't be with us 5 years later?
Once I told him that thinking about UM without you is unimaginable for me. I told him that his office is pleasant, enjoyable and delighting. Whenever I met him in our monthly appointments for my PhD research, I became excessively delighted, glad and remained optimistic for the next 2 or 3 weeks.
He was a great teacher – not in literature only, but in teaching humanity. Since I came back to my country, I have tried to be like him to my students: vast as ocean, deep as valleys, bright as moon, and warm as sun.
When I went to Mecca for Haj in 2007, I was in contact with him via internet. I told him that I shall pray for your health and longevity, and I did. The news of his demise was really more painful than hearing the death of my brother. He was great in soul, respectful in character and learned in knowledge.
He was a blessing for me, an angel or something like that. First, I was supposed to study in India, but everything changed as a miracle and I flew to KL. I always thank God for having a real human being as my supervisor.

Let me ask God that "Why should nice people die so early, and dictators remain alive to kill more?!" As a Muslim, it is my wish to be with Prof. Lim in the world hereafter.
No, he hasn't died! He is with us, in our souls, in our feelings and in our everyday's thoughts. I had good time with him and even once I told him that I like Malaysia and UM just for you. I hate saying 'good-bye', no, Prof. Lim is not dead. He has just left us, left to a better abode and we shall join him sooner or later. I hope I can have this honor to see him first …
PS: if anyone has any email address or tel no. of his wife or daughters, I shall appreciate to have. Thanks
